Tank's Ballpark Tour: Guaranteed Rate Field home of the Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox had a miserable season in 2024, losing a record 121 games. I visited Guaranteed Rate Field in April for a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The stadium opened in 1991 as Comiskey Park II. It was built across the street from the original Comiskey Park, which had stood on 35th Street on the South Side of Chicago since 1910. Almost from the start, the stadium was antiquated. As Camden Yards opened one year later, changing home ballparks were designed and built. The White Sox hope to build a new park in the next five years; as for their current stadium, it has missed the mark and struggled to impress their fans.
Renovated two decades ago before it was renamed US Cellular Field, the White Sox's lone moment of glory came in 2005 when they played in their first World Series in 1959 and won their first World Series since 1917.
