Horse Racing 101: Tomorrow Is The Pegasus World Cup At Gulfstream Park And Here's How YOU Should Bet It
This is something I've been toying with for a while. If you follow me on Twitter, you've maybe noticed how Chief and I linked up with a stable here in Chicago, Crown's Way Racing, to get in on the horse racing game. I've been around horse racing my entire life. I wouldn't call myself a horseman, per se, but I've cherry picked enough knowledge off my dad over the years to have a basic intermediary knowledge of the sport.
Chief, on other other hand, is a total novice. I don't mean that in a bad way, but he never really followed the sport even on an ancillary level. That has changed since we've linked up with Tony and Crown's Way. I figure that if Chief had no idea how to handicap/bet/enjoy horse racing, then others don't either. If this blog and video miniseries introduces the GREAT sport of horse racing, then it serves its purpose.
We have the first major race of the new year tomorrow, The Pegasus World Cup at Gulf Stream Park in Hallandale Beach, FL. It's 12 races total, 7 of them being stakes races (we'll get into that later), with the last two both being Grade 1 races. Portnoy's 8 year old monster of a horse Cross Border will be running in the Turf Invitational, the 11th race of the day. Cross Border hit the board in the same race last year, placing third.
We will be doing these informational style videos for the major races throughout the horse racing season, so figure you'll see them once a month or so. If you're looking to get into horse racing game, this is meant to be a COMPLETELY dumbed down Horse Racing 101 course. If you start to really follow the sport, you'll have an awesome time riding the storylines involved with it. Horses are just like any other athlete; you have your favorite horses, the horses have their primes, some have high ceilings, others have low floors, and they have slumps/hot streaks just like anyone else. They're insanely smart animals.
Just trust me on this - start small with the bets below, pick out random horses you like, and see if you can make some money off them. Eventually you'll learn what jockeys are good, which owner's stink, what sort of track a horse excels on or doesn't, and a whole world of other ways to handicap a race. One day you might get so good at handicapping a race you'll consider it "day trading" like my father, William Williams does.

- Purse: $1,000,000
- 1/28 Morning Line Favorite: 6 horse "Colonel Liam" at 3-1odds with jockey Irad Ortiz
NOTE: The 11 horse in this race is Cross Border, Dave Portnoy's horse. He's currently 15-1 on today's money line and has Reylu Gutierrez as his jockey.
TONY'S WAGERS:
1. $5 W/P/S 2 Atone 20-1 ($15 bet): This means you bet the horse to come in 3rd place or better. If it wins, you win all three bets. If the horse comes in 2nd, you win the 2nd and 3rd place pools. If it comes in 3rd, you win the 3rd place pool.
2. $2 EX Key box 2/5,6,8,11 ($16 bet): This means you need the 2 to come in 1st or 2nd and then one of the 5, 6, 8, or 11 horses to come in 1st or 2nd place.
3. $5 Double these two races 2,11/4 ($10 bet) - this is 2 race parlay. The 2 or 11 horse has to win the Turf Classic and the 4 horse has to win the Pegasus World Cup.

TONY'S WAGERS:
1. $50 Win on the 4 horse "Life Is Good" at 7/5 odds - straight win bet. He has to win to win this bet
2. $2 TRI 4/2/1,3,6,9 ($8 bet) - the 4 has to win, the 2 has to come in 2nd, and any one of the 1, 3, 6 and 9 horses can come in 3rd
3. $5 EX 4/2 - The 4 horse has to win, the 2 horse has to come in 2nd.
I said I don't consider myself a horseman. I consider Tony the best horseman I know. He's made a life off of it and though I wouldn't do anything as dumb as guaranteeing a win with these picks, I trust Tony's handicapping ability more than anyone and feel confident giving his picks to the public.
The next race we'll do this for is the Saudi Cup, which is the "richest horse race ever held", with a $20,000,000 purse. That race takes place on 2/26 and we'll do a similar - yet more advanced - breakdown of that race too.
