Drafting A Cornerback Would Simply Be The Dumbest Thing The Steelers Can Do In The 1st Round

You probably clicked this blog thinking that I was going to agree with the notion of "drafting a running back in the 1st round is dumb."

PFF's Mike Renner told me this morning he'll have to "see it to believe it" regarding the Steelers taking Harris in the 1st round. I do not think this is true. At all. In fact, I heavily disagree with that.

You know what would be the dumbest thing the Steelers could do on Thursday night's 1st round?

Draft a cornerback.

Fuuuuck that, dude. No chance. I don't care if Caleb Farley falls to them. Every driver has a blindspot and every NFL team has a draft weakness and the Steelers have proven time and time again that cornerback might as well be the moon to them.

I've seen some mock drafts that have them taking a "flyer" on different corners that wouldn't even be in the top 4-5 corners on a big board simply because it's a need. I agree that it is a need and something that should be addressed after letting Steven Nelson walk and Mike Hilton signing in Cincinnati. But they better not waste a fucking first round pick on a dude who we will always be waiting on. Keenan Lewis was the best corner on a team full of bad, aging corners. Curtis Brown, meh. Senquez Golson quite literally NEVER saw the field. I'm still telling myself "A few more snaps and Artie Burns will be CB1".

I mean seriously Cam Sutton is BY FAR the best corner on that list and he only just got paid a 2-year $9 million deal.

That is simply the dumbest thing they could do on Thursday night no matter how bad the need is. Drafting Najee Harris at 24 wouldn't even come close to that. He's the best back in the draft. The falloff from first best running back to 4th best running back is far greater than the top offensive lineman and the fourth offensive lineman.

If all the reports turn out to be true that Harris is their guy if he's there, then darn we'll just have to settle with the best back in the draft who is the all-time leading rusher at Alabama and a dynamic three-down back. Real bummer.
