"Puck Don't Lie" Featuring Nathan MacKinnon Scoring Twice In One Overtime

Here’s the biggest issue with the offsides review in the NHL; it doesn’t take into consideration how the offside actually effects the play at all. It just looks at the initial zone entry–no matter how long ago it was before the goal was scored–and makes the call from there. So because your skate could be less than half an inch off the ice over 35 seconds before a goal is scored, that goal can get called off. And I understand that the play should have been whistled dead 35 seconds ago in the first place if it were truly offside. But the amount of ticky tacky shit calls this new challenge system has brought on is mind bottling. Like this call right here.

The only reason this entry is offside is because Lowry trips Barrie right at the blueline. Then the Avs don’t score until 15 seconds after the entry. They have enough time to get set up in their powerplay, make a few passes and then the puck is in the back of the net. They didn’t gain a single advantage by Barrie being an inch offside. If anything it hurt them because now they’re heading into the zone on a 3v3 with Barrie on the ice, plus he took the extra second to try to tag up in time once he got up. But because the rule doesn’t take any of that into consideration, the goal gets called off because in the most technical sense of all time, he was offside. If anything should get called here it should be Lowry for tripping or interference. But instead the refs wipe off a goal that would have given the Avalanche the win. Could you imagine if that bullshit happened in a playoff game and the Jets ended up winning later in the overtime period? Holy shit there would be mayhem in the streets. Luckily for all the stripes involved, the Puck. Don’t. Mother. Fudging. Lie.

Because 30 seconds after the first overtime goal, Nathan MacKinnon called game for the 2nd time of the night.

Couple of things here. 1) That’s a sick dish from Alex Kerfoot. Did you know that he went to Harvard? Usually not a big fan of guys who used to play hockey at Harvard but I’m starting to come around on Kerfoot. And 2) Now that the whole Matt Duchene saga is over, I’m so ready for everybody to start realizing what a stud Nathan MacKinnon is. I don’t think he’s underrated in any sense of the word but I just think he’s been overshadowed by the Duchene dilemma in Colorado. That’s all everybody would talk about whenever the Avs were in the news but now that Duchene is up in Ottawa, this is clearly MacKinnon’s franchise. And the kid is just getting started.

P.S. – One last thing here. Kind of a weird move by Mikko Rantanen to go ass-first into this celebration, no?

What’s the deal with that? Totally blocks MacKinnon right out of that one. Is there trouble a brewin’ in paradise? You tell me.
