12 High School Golfers DQ'd From Oregon State Tournament Because Officials Fucked Up The Scorecard

Golf ChannelTwelve high school golfers were disqualified from the Oregon state tournament for playing from an incorrect tee box.

According to OregonLive.com, the incident resulted from a scorecard error. The tournament-issued cards listed the par-3 13th at 172 yards, which is what the red tees were playing at No. 13 (the fourth hole of the round). However, players were supposed to be playing blue tees.

The first four groups competed on the red tees, before tournament officials recognized the mistake. It was determined that those 12 players would be allowed to continue playing in the event, but their scores would not count.

Ahhhh it had been a while since we’d seen a story reminding us that golf is golf so I’m glad this one just popped up. Just when you worry we may be getting away from the traditions of the game, Oregon sweeps in to save the day and completely fucks a bunch of high school golfers because of a scorecard mistake by tournament officials. Thank god. Our beloved game is protected. Our beloved game continues to uphold the centuries old integrity of completely fucking people for incredibly dumb reasons.

The scorecard said 172 yards so the first 12 high schoolers who came through played it from 172 yards… and they all got DQ’d for it. Now it would be one thing if the entire field had the same information and played the right tees except for a few people but that’s not what happened. What happened was each and every one of the first 12 kids who came through before officials noticed the scorecard error played the wrong tees. Then officials figured it out and informed the rest of the field, so the rest of the field played the “correct” tees and were not punished. The first 12 were punished. They were DQ’d. Amazing.

Instead of the only adults in the room taking responsibility for the fuck up, they punish 12 teenagers? Come on. They obviously could’ve said, “hey all 12 people that’ve come through thought it was from 172 yards, because the card says 172 yards, so let’s have everyone play from 172 yards, problem solved.”

Nope.

Golf never ceases in pivotal decisions to make the least sensible and most problematic ruling possible.

PS — Speaking of golf in Oregon, here’s one of my drone shots from Bandon just because.
