A Response To Big Cat: Trae Young Should Go No. 1 Overall If He Signs With Puma

So my friend Big Cat of Arod Corp. fame wrote about Trae Young signing with Puma.  It included things like the following:

This may seem like a hot take but it’s rooted in some truth. You can’t have your first round draft pick and future face of your franchise repped by Puma can you? Puma? Puma is a step below Starbury’s. They’re fine shoes if you’re driving a motorcycle or training with your local football club, but basketball and Puma? No thanks. So this is a big test for Trae Young. Take a ton of Puma money and have your decision making questioned for the rest of your career. Or be a normal person and get repped by Nike or Adidas.

Now I’m not here to ruffle any feathers, but rather to show why Trae Young should go No. 1 overall if he signs with Puma. First and foremost it shows he’s a guy that plays within the rules and is a law-abiding citizen. I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer my point guard to be on the court. Adidas is currently being sued by Skechers due to their role in the FBI investigation into college basketball. I need my first round pick on the basketball court, not the courtroom. So right there should cancel Adidas.

Then there’s Nike. Well, Trae Young idolizes Steph Curry. You know who screwed up Steph Curry’s sales pitch? Nike. If you want to be like Steph Curry – arguably the best point guard in basketball right now – you can’t go to Nike. That would be just dumb. You know who is currently repped by Nike? Giannis with a last name that I don’t think I’ve ever heard pronounced correctly and Paul George, who gave himself a nickname. Nike’s out.

So now we’re down to Under Armour and Puma. Under Armour has Steph Curry on the roster. That’s Trae Young’s enemy right now. You don’t sign with Under Armour. Plus, they do a bunch of stuff Maryland themed which I’m out on – except Old Bay. Give me all the Old Bay.

So here comes Puma, who once had Vince Carter wearing Puma shoes. In fact Vince Carter was the last basketball player to wear Puma shoes. He’s still playing in the NBA. Just goes to show you that if you wear Puma you’re guaranteed a 20-year career. That sounds pretty promising to me. I mean I’d wear Puma right now for a 20 year career guarantee, makes you think that a point guard should do the same thing. Plus, going with Puma shows you’re innovative. The game right now is moving to this small-ball era and all about being able to create space off the dribble. Going with Puma checks that off the list. So it’s a no-brainer that if Trae Young signs with Puma he should be the No. 1 overall pick and turn into the next Vince Carter.*

*Or goes somewhere like Orlando and has to shoot a billion times because no one can create for themselves on the Magic and does so while wearing Puma. Either one.
