Chris Sale Exits The Game After Being Hit By A Comebacker To The Hip

Fuck. I know this sounds weird, but I think this is actually somewhat good news? I mean, the thud that we all heard when the baseball hit Chris Sale’s hip was undoubtedly an “Oh, fuck” moment, but he got back up immediately, so take from that what you will. However, he grabbed his knee on the way back up. I thought for sure we were dealing with a knee injury of some sort in addition to the impact of the comebacker, but the official word right now is that it’s a hip contusion. Still, not exactly out of the woods yet considering that Sale is 100 pounds soaking wet and a hip contusion to him is much more painful and potentially damaging than a hip contusion to most others.

Not that I want to have this line of thinking right now, but I wonder who the Red Sox would go with to replace Sale in the rotation if he had to miss any time. You already have Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Steven Wright unavailable to step in due to injuries, so you’d have to either dip down to Pawtucket for an arm — Roenis Elias is on the 40-man roster, but he spent all but one of his spring appearances working as a reliever — or perhaps look outside of the organization for help. We’ll keep you updated as soon as more information rolls in.

Here’s your update:

Sounds like he’s still good to go for Opening Day.
