Having 58 Grams of Weed at the Airport in Costa Rica is Not the Best Look for Duron Harmon

Well this is not the sort of thing you want to wake up to on a quiet Saturday in the off-season.

There’s just so much here that I don’t get. The first being that why would anyone smuggle pot into Costa Rica? I spent a week down there a few years ago and it is beautiful country. With nice people. A very agrarian/rural economy. And a beautiful climate. In other words, just perfect for growing weed. I’m a beer, bourbon and cigars guy so I didn’t look for any, but it has to be the easiest find in the world down there. I could be wrong. Maybe the laws are strict. But my guess is that smuggling pot into a place like Costa Rica is equivalent to smuggling opium into Afghanistan or underage prostitutes into Thailand. What’s the point?

Second, Harmon is one of the consummate Belichick Guys. A Rutgers product who was a reach in the draft but workded out and earned the coveted second contract. A smart, clutch defender. I believe eight of his 14 career interceptions have come in the final four minutes of close games. He produced the Pats only takeaway of the last Super Bowl. The very definition of a Belichick Guy. Which is why its so disappointing he went into this without a plan. If you’re going to try this, work out all the angles first. Have contingencies. Be ready to make adjustments. Call audibles. You don’t just jam the baggies into iced tea cans and hope for the best.

I mean, has he never seen Locked Up Abroad? These baggage inspectors in developing countries live to bag rich Americans muling drugs into their land. He had no problem getting it past customs in Miami because our guys don’t give a shit. They actually care. He should’ve known that.

Who knows at this point? Maybe Harmon does have this covered. Maybe he can play the old “fall guy” card that Cris Carter so elegantly advised the crowd at the NFL rookie symposium. Perhaps he’s got a cousin he can blame the way Ty Law did when he got stopped smuggling E through customs in Canada in 2000. What I hope will happen is the Patriots do nothing. If the NFL suspends him, suck it up, let him appeal it, wait for the appeal to get denied, then serve it and then move on. Because Harmon is a baller and they need him and winning more Super Bowls is way more important in the grand scheme of things than national sovereignty or the scourge of international drug smuggling.

And the weirdest three months of the Patriots Dynasty just keeps getting weirder.
