Madison Bumgarner Has A Fractured Hand After Getting Hit By A Line Drive
It didn’t look bad when it happened because Madison Bumgarner is a tough son of a bitch, but FUUUUUUUUCK. This sucks. A lot. After leading the league with 34 starts in 2016, Bumgarner was limited to just 17 starts last year after injuring himself in a dirt bike accident. Bruised ribs and a sprained pitching shoulder landed the left-hander on the disabled list from April 21 through July 17. Now, the Giants find themselves in the exact same situation as they did a year ago, attempting to compete in a loaded division without their ace pitcher.
Oh, it gets worse. In addition to losing Bumgarner, the Giants also found out today that they’re going to be without their number three starter Jeff Samardzija for up to a month with a pectoral strain.
As you’re probably well aware, the Giants were tied with the Detroit Tigers for the worst record in baseball last year. Despite adding names like Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen this past winter, it’s going to be difficult to steer their ship back in a winning direction without Bumgarner and Samardzija, who despite leading the league in losses last season, also led the league in innings pitched with a half decent 4.42 ERA and is just a couple years removed from posting a 3.81 ERA in his first year with the Giants.
UPDATE: Here’s the timeline on MadBum.
