The Boston Bruins Should Be Ashamed Of Themselves For Pulling Ryan Donato Out Of Harvard

So by now, I’m sure that everybody has heard about Ryan Donato’s debut with the Boston Bruins last night. 3 points in his 1st game including popping home the first geno of his career. Not bad, not bad at all. Donato has been have an unreal start to 2018. He got to play in the Olympics for Team USA. Had 5 goals on the world’s biggest stage. And then last night he made his NHL debut. But at what cost?

Well the Boston Bruins took Donato out of Harvard just so they could lose to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Think about that for a second. Harvard. One of the most prestigious schools in all of the world. Donato was a junior there. I wasn’t his academic advisor but I’m willing to bet he was probably on track to graduate on time. Then all of a sudden he gets a call from Don Sweeney and he says they want him in the lineup for the night. How is a kid who is from Boston, whose dad played for the Bruins, supposed to say no to that? He can’t.

But that’s the issue here. That’s the issue with the college hockey in general. Far too many kids leave school to go pro before they graduate from school. It’s a damn shame and it’s something you would never see in any other sport. College basketball and college football players all realize that in this day and age, you can’t get a job without a college degree. Stay for your 4 years. Get that piece of paper at the end. And then if you want to go play sports professionally, you can, and at least you’ll have your degree to fall back on in case things don’t go the way you think they will. But you don’t have that safety net to fall back on if you don’t graduate. What if Ryan Donato doesn’t pan out for the Bruins? What then? It’s a life of flipping burgers and scrapping off dead animals from the interstate because he doesn’t have a degree.

But look at all the incredible jobs he could have had lined up if he were to stay at Harvard until graduation. He could have been a blogger at Barstool Sports.

Or even better, he could have been a blogger at Barstool Sports.

Basically all I’m saying is that Ryan Donato would have had so many different opportunities waiting for him if he just stayed at Harvard for another year and graduated. But instead, he’s stuck trying to make a life in the NHL. Like I said, I don’t blame him at all for the decision. But the Boston Bruins? Well they should know better. Shame on them.
