Should The PGA Hire Me As Their PR Director?
Golf.com – Rory McIlroy has long been one of the most honest and thoughtful voices in the sport, so he had plenty to say when asked if he had any incidents with unruly fans at Bay Hill. McIlroy, answering one of the final questions following his third-round press conference at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday, cited one fan who was heckling him and even offered a suggestion for the Tour. “There was one guy out there who kept yelling my wife’s name; I was going to go over and have a chat with him, but, yeah, I don’t know, I think it’s gotten a little much, to be honest,” he said. “I think that they need to limit the alcohol sales on the course, or they need to do something, because every week it seems like guys are complaining about it more.”
So another weekend and another prominent golfer complaining about unruly fans. This time it was Rory McIllroy saying that the PGA should stop selling boos on the course. Why? Because some fan kept yelling his wife’s name at him.
Listen I’m not going to debate whether Rory was within his rights to propose this rule change or complain about getting heckled. Would I complain about it? No because I’m mentally tough, but I understand that Golfers aren’t as tough as I am. They weren’t born from mud. They were born in country clubs. And I do agree with Rory that you gotta be an absolute douchebag to keep screaming his wife’s name at him. This was not a Justin Thomas situation. I wouldn’t roast him for getting that fan kicked out. But that’s not even the point of this blog.
How stupid are golfers? Just keep your mouth shut and take care of shit behind the scenes. If some asshole keeps yelling your wife’s name tell your caddy or somebody quietly to take care of it so it never reaches the media. Don’t go public saying you want to ban liquor at golf tournaments. That is the opposite of fan friendly. I don’t care how big of a douchebag you are (Justin Thomas) or how within your rights you are (Rory McIllroy) just don’t go public that you hate loud fans and rowdy fans. That you want to ban alcohol sales. It’s a no win situation and just reinforces the image of golf being a stuffy game for stuck up country club brats.
