Jeremy "Who Da Fook Is That Guy" Stephens Is Proving Who Da Fook He Is, Knocks Out Doo Ho Choi In The Second Round
Now that headline’s an interesting one, because Jeremy Stephens is coming up on 11 years in the UFC, but hey, homeboy is so inconsistent it kinda fits! He wrecked my guy Doo Ho Choi tonight with a POWERFUL right hook followed by an H-BOMB like punch while The Korean Superboy was on the ground. I know in a few months when they set up Stephens vs Brian Ortega or even The Korean Zombie, they’ll point to this and claim he’s the knockout artist of the division, but again, he TKO’d his opponent. It was a flush, savage TKO, but he’s not this crazy knockout artist like they love to claim. It was a fun fight, though, with Choi winning the first, landing a nice front kick at the start of the second that seemed to piss Stephens off, then the finish coming. Hats off to him for the performance and at least trying to be classy and thanking all of the fans from Korea…although getting the translator to translate that after he knocked their boy out was a bit much.
In the co-main event, Paige VanZant was defeated by Jessica-Rose Clark. VanZant’s right arm was broken off a spinning backfist in the first round and she battled her way through the rest of the fight, even winning the third and final round using only left jabs and her legs. Although Paige is kind of a friend of the program and I picked her to win, I was happy for Clark. On Thursday, her house was broken into and robbed. The burglars kicked her cat so hard she had to put it down. Seemed like a much needed win to salvage something out of this week.
Kamaru Usman defeated Emil Meek incredibly dominantly, although very boring, and there’s definitely a joke about Usman hailing from Nigeria, a “shithole” country, beating the shit out of someone from Norway, but I’m not gonna dig for that one.
Finally, in the first fight of the main card, Darren Elkins had yet another come-from-behind win over Michael Johnson after getting the everliving shit kicked out of him in the first (10-8) round. I feel like every fight this guy has I pick against him, citing the previous win as a fluke, and then he goes out and finds a new way to win every time. He’s strung together six wins in a row! He may find his way into title contention soon! How absolutely insane is that?! Granted, I hope he doesn’t, because Max Holloway would quite literally commit a homicide in the cage in what would be the easiest fight of his life, but it’s definitely worth nothing. Maybe they can matchmake Elkins vs Korean Zombie and Stephens vs Ortega.
Next week we’ve got UFC 220 from Boston, MA, and I’ll be there as an unbiased journalist rooting for Francis Ngannou to defeat Stipe Miocic for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Also have our guy Daniel Cormier defending the Light Heavyweight title against Volkan “No Time” Oezdemir in what’ll be a fun one. Can’t wait for that. Watch the trailer again just to get yourself hype for the barbaric human cockfighting…
