I Need Will Ferrell To Straight Up Announce He Will Not Sully Step Brothers By Making A Sequel

Step Brothers is one of those classic comedies that will never not be funny. It’s a must-watch every time it’s on. It’s a perfect movie for a Sunday on the couch with Chinese food and the shivers from a weekend of way too many Red Bulls Vodkas. When TBS has that Wedding Crashers->Old School->Step Brothers trifecta, you know you’re safe. You know no matter what happened over the weekend, no matter who you drunk texted, no matter how bad your Sunday Scaries are, you can take solace in those movies and not have to worry about the real world.

And that is why Will Ferrell needs to stop beating around the bush and let us know in confidence that Step Brothers is his angel and he will not sully it with a sequel:

AV Club - Speaking with the New York Daily News, Ferrell says that he and McKay talked about doing another Step Brothers, but they “got sidetracked with other things.”

Ferrell says Step Brothers 2 would’ve been about him and Reilly following their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) to a retirement community, where they would try to convince them that they had “earned the right to retire as well.” Basically, with the first movie being about Ferrell and Reilly resisting the need to grow up, the sequel would’ve been about them deciding that they were done being adults and wanted to be seniors.

It sounds like the experience with Anchorman 2 kind of soured Ferrell on sequels to his comedy movies, since that movie was made because fans kept asking for it and then those same fans decided that it wasn’t as good as the first one. That being said, Daddy’s Home 2 is coming out in just a few days, so maybe Ferrell holds the original Step Brothers to a higher standard than the original Daddy’s Home.

I think the fact he made a sequel to “Daddy’s Home” speaks volumes to how he feels about Step Brothers. He has no problem whoring out Daddy’s Home but he holds Step Brothers in high regard, and won’t willy nilly make a sequel just because some jagaloons on the internet are pining for one. If you think you need a sequel to Step Brothers, you’re just incorrect. There’s a reason there’s Da Vinci didn’t paint “Mona Lisa 2: Electric Boogaloo”. There’s a reason Breaking Bad didn’t go on for another 10 seasons. And there’s a reason Step Brothers doesn’t need a sequel. It’s too classic, too revered, and all in all just too wonderful to need one.

And besides, we saw what happened when Dumb And Dumber made a sequel. It stunk. And Zoolander made a sequel. It stunk. And the immortal Anchorman made a sequel and wooooahhhh boy, it STUNK. And I feel bad for Will Ferrell because there was so much demand for it, and there was just no way, no way in all heck, that a sequel to Anchorman could ever live up to the original. And I think Will Ferrell saw the backlash that came from it and decided he didn’t want to deal with it again. It probably SUCKED that after all the fans got the sequel they wanted, they then were like “ehhhh…probably could have done without it, to be quite honest”.

So Will Ferrell needs to just come out and say “Step Brothers is a comedic masterpiece, and we will not make a sequel”. Everyone with a brain will understand.

PS: I just thought of this- I would be ok with a sequel when him and John C Reily are like…80 years old. Just old as hell and they still refuse to grow up. Almost more like a remake than a sequel. But they are super, super old as dirt.

PS: What an unbelievably quotable movie. I hope we appreciate Will Ferrell enough while he’s here. Not that I expect him to die any time soon but just saying I hope we appreciate all the classics he’s given us.
