Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson Won't Be Breaking Any Records Tomorrow Night...The UFC 215 Main Event Has Been Cancelled
MMAFighting- Demetrious Johnson won’t be breaking Anderson Silva’s UFC title defense record this weekend after all. In fact, he won’t even get the opportunity to do so.
Ray Borg, Johnson’s UFC 215 opponent, was forced to withdraw from the fight on Thursday evening due to illness, thus canceling Saturday night’s main event, MMA Fighting has learned. As a result, the Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko women’s bantamweight title fight will serve as the new pay-per-view main event in Edmonton.
According to multiple sources, Borg has been battling an illness this week and was deemed unfit to fight by UFC doctors. His illness was unrelated to his weight cut, sources say.
Aw piss. I was really excited about this fight…not in the conventional “This will be awesome!” way, but more in the “I love watching greatness” way. Mighty Mouse defines greatness. He’s the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world (haha suck it Jon Jones) and when, not if, he successfully defended his UFC Flyweight Championship tomorrow against Ray Borg, he’d break Anderson Silva’s record for most title defenses ever. Now he’s not even on the card, and Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight belt will main event. Many people considered this the “true” main event anyway because it’s a better fight, but after Nunes pulled out of UFC 213 this July Dana White SWORE she’d never headline again. That lasted a lot shorter than when he said Jon Jones would never headline again.
Ray Borg’s illness was apparently not related to his weight cut, but as Patrick Wyman (best analyst in the sport) pointed out here, of course it was.
Borg has missed 4 of his last 9 fights mostly due to weight cut issues, giving little validity to Johnson’s argument against taking a TJ Dillashaw fight this Summer, claiming he was worried TJ would miss weight. This fight is looking to be rescheduled for next month, however, so hopefully we’ll see history be made at UFC 216. As far as 215 goes, the only record that’ll be broken is the “Lowest PPV Buyrate Ever” one, currently held by UFC 55: Fury. I kid, but with so little promotion, tomorrow’s event should go down in the history books as one of the least profitable events in company history.
P.S. Poor Canada, man. This is the seventh UFC pay per view in the Great White North to lose it’s main event. UFC 206, UFC 186, UFC 161, UFC 149, UFC 131, UFC 115 are the other six. Sorrey.
My full preview for UFC 215 will be available tomorrow afternoon.
