The rumbling on the tracks of the Aaron Judge Hype Train have awoken a sleeping giant in Giancarlo Stanton. While everyone was busy comparing Judge to Stanton, it seems that people had forgotten that Big Dick Stanton is still Big Dick Stanton. As of this very moment, after his 30th home run of the season today, Stanton is now tied with Judge for the major league lead in homers. He now has nine bombs in his last ten starts (he entered a game in the sixth inning on July 6 as a pinch hitter and didn’t homer), all of which have come in the month of July.
Stanton’s nine homers this month set a new Marlins franchise record for the most home runs in the month of July. BDS also became the fastest to 30 home runs in Marlins history, getting to the mark in 93 games. Mike Lowell previously held the record, hitting his 30th home run of the 2003 season in Game 110. Lowell finished that season, which ended with a World Series title, with just two more homers. BDS is on pace to hit 52, which would be the highest regular season total by anybody in the majors since Chris Davis hit 53 in 2013. The race to see who finishes the 2017 season with the most home runs is gonna be an absolute dog fight*
*until Stanton pulls his groin in late August and misses several weeks, effectively ending the home run race.
