Rory Says He's Taking A Break From Social Media After Twitter Spat With Steve Elkington

BBC- Rory McIlroy says he has stopped using social media following his row with former US PGA champion Steve Elkington. The world number four and Elkington engaged in a public spat on Twitter after McIlroy missed the cut at the US Open for the second year running. The Australian said McIlroy, having won four majors and with “100mill in bank”, was bored playing without Tiger Woods. McIlroy responded with: “More like 200mill, not bad for a ‘bored’ 28-year-old. Plenty more where that came from.” Speaking on the eve of his defence of the Irish Open at Portstewart, McIlroy revealed he regretted reacting to Elkington and was avoiding social media for the foreseeable future. “I must have wrote that tweet and deleted it about five times before I actually sent it,” McIlroy said on Wednesday. “I sort of regret sending it at the end but I actually gave my wife, Erica, my phone and my Twitter and told her, ‘Change my password to something else and don’t tell me what it is’. “So as of the time being, I’m off social media just because of that reason. I don’t need to read it. It’s stuff that shouldn’t get to you and sometimes it does.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

A litte refresher for the people at home. Here is Rory going at Elk on Twitter

So that was Rory putting Elk in a body bag about 3 weeks ago. Just coming down and dropping the hammer on Steve Elkington. Well it looks like that was the final straw for Rory on Twitter and social media. Well maybe not the final straw but at the very least he’s taking a break. To which I say fine. Do I want more Rory McIlroy on Twitter? Stuffing haters in lockers and laughing all the way to the bank? I sure do. Rory is one of the very very very very few true voices in current professional sports. Sure, almost all professional athletes take to Twitter or have a mic shoved in their face before or after games. But very few of them have anything good or interesting to say. It’s usually sound bites that you’ve heard a million times to the point where your eyes glaze over and you wanna die. Not Rory. He’s thoughtful and opinionated and actually gives a shit when that Twitter account or mic is shoved into his face. He’s like the Bizarro Grayson Murray when it comes to that stuff. So any time a guy like that decides to hang up the metaphorical cleats, it’s a loss for everybody. He’ll be back though. I might take one for the team and question his drive and motivation just to lure him back in.
