Big Cass Just Turned On Enzo Amore And Ripped My Heart Out Of My God Damn Chest

Fuuuuuuuuuck. This emoji…

…is my real life face. I fucking loved Enzo and Cass as a team. LOVED them. One of my favorite acts not only in the WWE, but in the world. I started to worry about a potential breakup on May 30th when I picked up this little exchange on RAW…

I genuinely thought, “No, there’s no way. I’m overthinking it. WWE hasn’t done this kind of subtly in YEARS.” Unfortunately, I wasn’t overthinking it.

This segment started out as a trainwreck, with thousand yard stare Kurt Angle interrogating suspects, and then a switch flipped when Corey Graves revealed that nobody ever attacked Cass. It was all a set up…and Big Cass, the guy who’s spent his entire career playing second fiddle to Enzo Amore…the guy known for not being very good on the mic…cut the promo of the year. It was heartbreaking. Children (and adults) were crying. ENZO was crying. I was crying.

It’s still real to me dammit.

Now, while the promo couldn’t have been executed any better, and everyone played their roles fantastically, this is one of my least favorite things the company has done in many years. There was absolutely no need to break Enzo and Cass up. Never once did anyone say “What is there left for Enzo and Cass to do?” because they never got to do anything. They never won the titles in NXT, never won them on the main roster, never even had a meaningful feud on the main roster, and never did anything but succeed, despite all of that. They succeeded because they were fun. My brother and I went to a RAW recently while Braun was injured, and my brother said “Is there anything to really look forward to on this show?” My answer was yes. Enzo and Cass’ entrance.

For the past few years (counting NXT), this silly tag team was the most over gimmick on the entire show for EVERY show I went to (that’s a lot of shows). I’d go as far as saying they were the most over act since Daniel Bryan, and in a time where the WWE is grasping at straws for organic babyfaces the crowd actually likes, we’re throwing this one away…for a moment? For this moment?

A former WWE writer came out this week and said Vince informed the writing staff never to be concerned with long term storytelling. Only be concerned with moments. That’s what I’m thinking a lot about tonight. While this was a “moment” I’ll never forget, I can’t imagine it will be beneficial to either Enzo or Cass long term. If anything, it’ll skyrocket Cass into a main event position (because he’s seven feet tall, and Vince LOVES how hard that is to teach), and Enzo will become a Cruiserweight. He’ll have to pick up his in-ring slack more than ever on the mic no matter what now, and with the way he was booked with Cass ALONGSIDE him, I think he’s in for a bad fall from grace. The payoff at SummerSlam in Brooklyn will be great, but I just can’t help but worry for both of them afterwards.

That being said, they knocked this segment out of the park, and I’m REEEEAAAALLLLY rooting for them to succeed. So much. I neeeeeed them to succeed.

Full RAW recap tomorrow (or later today if you’re reading this Tuesday morning) as always. Hug those you love a little tighter tonight.
