The Road To 161-1 Has Started For The Yankees
Sunday was an absolute fluke. This team can hit enough to cover some shaky pitching and as we saw tonight, if we get 5 innings of decent pitching our bullpen can carry us the rest of the way. Yes, there were a few balls that found holes for the Yankees but you must take those breaks when they come your way and make the most of it.
Ellsbury is still the worst contract in baseball but he’s giving us some good production and playing heads up baseball out of the 5 hole. The 2nd worst player in Yankee fan’s eyes, Headley, added another 2 hits tonight including a home run. Some of the younger guys are struggling but when you get production out of the guys you expect the least from, you can see the promise of the season.
Obviously, the biggest concern so far is that El Gary is 0-10. We saw a few strikeouts tonight where he was just behind on pitches and the possibility of him pressing too hard is very real. I’m not that worried because some of these balls a hard hit, and tonight he was robbed of a double on a great play by Longoria. Combine that hit with the ball up the middle yesterday and the confidence is there to find a 3rd hit somewhere and be batting .300.
Torreyes was a star tonight on both sides of the ball and CC showed that he still can dial things up if he gets a good sweat going. Didi isn’t losing his job and CC will struggle at times but it’s good to know these guys can deliver.
Tomorrow night we look to take the series and prove how back we are.
