Ed Sheeran Is Going To Guest Star On Game Of Thrones And Even As A Huge Ed Sheeran Guy, I Hate It

(Source)From the Grammys to Game of Thrones, Ed Sheeran’s year is shaping up to be a big one. The “Shape of You” singer-songwriter, currently sitting pretty at the top of the Billboard 200 with his new album ÷ (Divide), will be making a guest appearance on the next season of HBO’s epic fantasy drama. Show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed the season 7 casting news Sunday (March 12) at a SXSW panel moderated by Game of Thrones stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it,” Benioff said. His statement was confirmed by an HBO spokeswoman, though no further details about Sheeran’s role were given. The HBO hit is set for two more abbreviated seasons.

I’m an Ed Sheeran fan. Huge, huge fan. I actually think that Shape of You radio song sucks but I’m into everything else on his new album and the Barcelona to Bibi Bi Ye Ye to Nancy Mulligan run is the happiest ten minutes of my day, every day. My hatred of this move has nothing to do with Eddie and everything to do with “Game of Thrones.”

Because Thrones is bigger than this bullshit. For the last few months we’ve been hearing about new special guests coming this season, we’ve heard about Conor McGregor, Noah Syndergaard, and now Ed Sheeran. It’s bullshit, folks. This “bring in mega stars and have them fart around in the background, maybe even say a line” is network TV bullshit to generate ratings. Let the “Modern Family” shows bring in Peyton Manning, Charles Barkley, and DeAndre Jordan to keep their viewers entertained. Let “Blindspot” bring in Ronda Rousey to get some press. You’re “Game of Thrones,” for god’s sake! This is beneath you.

Thrones is about blood, guts, sex, and storytelling. That’s what keeps viewers tuning in and coming back. This use of celebrity is a stupid parlor trick and it poisons the show for me. You’re like the most watched show in television history, you’re not dying for viewers, so quit it with taking away from actual scenes with dumb sizzle in the background. Just give me the steak.
