The Broken Hardy Brothers May Be Headed Back To WWE
In the Attitude Era, the Hardy Boyz ran the tag team game. Jeff was the fan favorite, with his rainbow hair, jumping off ladders, going through tables, absolutely destroying his body, while Matt held down the fort and laid the foundation of the team. Jeff was definitely the Shawn, and Matt was definitely the Marty. That dynamic drastically changed last year, when Matt Hardy debuted his new “Broken” gimmick.
Initially, I thought it was the worst thing in pro wrestling history. The Sweeney Todd hair, the brutal accent, the preposterous vocabulary, it was all in the “so bad it’s good” category. We were all laughing at Matt Hardy…until we realized we were laughing with him.
With that promo, it was clear they were 100% in on the ridiculousness, and with The Final Deletion, Delete or Decay, and Total Nonstop Deletion, they perfected the gimmick.
Ownership of TNA just shifted, and Jeff Jarrett’s back in charge, diminishing how much power and creative control the Hardys have. With that, came Matt shutting down his online store (something independent wrestlers have to do when they sign to WWE):
Matt’s wife saying goodbye to TNA (and kind of dragging them too):
And Matt stirring the pot…
I know for a fact that the WWE has been interested in bringing the Hardys back for a while, and is VERY interested in them at the moment. Dave Meltzer (wrestling’s #1 Big J) said if they’re not at Thursday’s TNA tapings, expect them under the WWE’s banner shortly.
I can’t get myself too excited yet, because nobody ruins a great gimmick like Vince. The genius of the Broken gimmick comes from the mind of Matt, and Vince McMahon doesn’t like anything he’s not in full and total control of. With WWE-written promos, I can see the schtick getting real old, real fast.
We’ll see, though, because this IS professional wrestling, and we could be getting worked like a mark.
