The Time Is Ticking On Either Franchising Or Signing Kirk Cousins Long Term, And Nobody Knows What Will Happen
Oh it’s lit!
Wait….
What?
Woke up this morning bright eyed and bushy tailed, and went to Twitter to see if there are any Kirk Cousins updates. And what did I find? Well it appears your guess is as good as mine. Some sources and experts seem to think they will reach a long-term deal. Others seem to think the Skins are content with slapping a franchise tag on him for the 2nd straight year.
If they franchise him, that would mean paying him $23.94 million against the cap this season, and then all but lose him moving forward. A long-term deal means a ton of guaranteed money, but obviously the ability to structure it and move money around and what have you, making it more team-friendly.
I for one understand how hard it is to get a QB who can throw for 29 TDs and nearly 5,000 yards in this league. Even a guy from Uruguay could flip on any Thursday Night game and watch the QB play, and understand how important it is to have a competent guy under center. Stability at QB is so important, and so rare, in the NFL. Shit, people are saying the same things about Cousins now as they said about Matt Ryan at the beginning of his career, and Ryan just turned in an MVP season. Good QBs not only don’t grow on trees, they also take time to develop. Kirk hasn’t even reached his peak yet, it’d be silly to let him go.
The thing that obviously sucks is how expensive keeping a QB around is. They get PAID. The Flacco deal, the Cutler deal (lol that deal), the Brocketship deal…you have to dump a shitload of money into QBs. It’s just the way the league works. That’s why I’m so comfortable with paying Kirk- it’s either pay a QB a ton of money, or always sucks. Sure you can get extremely lucky and stumble on a 4th round pick like Dak, but that is so rare and unpredictable. The Cowboys wanted Paxton Lynch, settled for Dak, and now look. That’s why when you have a guy, you need to stick with him.
Maybe Kirk will be franchised and then they’ll work out a longer deal, that’s always possible. It’s impossible to say right now, and nobody has any idea what will happen between now and March 1st.
