Matthew Centrowitz Wins America's First Gold Medal in the 1500 Since 1908 #CrabcakesAndGoldMedals

NBC - Matthew Centrowitz of Annapolis, Maryland, ran from the front and held off Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria at the line to win the gold medal in the men’s 1,500 meters, an event Team USA hadn’t won in more than a century.

Centrowitz won the silver medal at the 2013 world championships and took fourth at the 2012 London Games. His father also qualified for two Olympics, in 1976 and 1980. Centrowitz went professional after graduating from the University of Oregon, where he holds two school records and was a PAC-10 champion for three straight years. He won the NCAA 1500m title, as well as his first U.S. 1500m title in 2011.

Man, he fucking did it. After finishing 4th in the 1500 4 years ago, Centrowitz was not going to settle for anything less than the best this time around. So all the Annapolis native did was go out there and win America’s first gold medal in the 1500m since 1908 and bring another gold home to Maryland. If you’re even remotely interested in running, maybe you saw one of the Prefontaine movies, you should go and watch Centro’s race from last night. He ran it perfectly, finishing with a time of 3:50, which was a full 15 seconds slower than his 4th place time in London.

Meanwhile, we have another gold medal alert with wrestling phenom Kyle Snyder going for gold later today around 12:30.

If anyone knows how we can send any of these guys shirts, hit the email.

Our crab cakes and gold medals watch will conclude with Kevin Durant (and possibly Melo, depending on where he feels like being from today) playing for gold against Serbia at 2:45.
