Bob Costas Used To Do Play-By-Play Commentary Of The Pick-Up Hoops Games He Was Playing

Rod Thorn joined Woj on the Vertical Podcast yesterday and discussed a bunch of NBA stuff, including his time with the Bulls, MJ, the Brooklyn Nets, and more. But Thorn also dropped this story about Bob Costas:
Woj: Now Polinksy told me that he [Costas] did one thing when he was playing those pick-up games that drove you crazy.
Thorn: He did a bunch of things that drove me crazy, but the biggest was he would never pass, was the biggest thing. He would call fouls.
Woj: But also he would do play-by-play, he would announce you…
Thorn: Oh yeah. He’d take a shot “And 20-footer by Costas. Good!”. Shut up. You’re losing every game. Shut up. Yeah, he would do that.

I don’t care who you are, this is a dickhead move. Even Marv Albert and the NBA Jam announcer don’t have the leeway to call their own play-by-play during a pick-up game. And they are the two best to ever call a basketball game. Then again, I can’t say that I’m shocked Bob Costas did this. That is 100% something a guy that lectures America every Sunday night before an NFL game would do. Such a pipsqueak move. Costas also probably calls every reach in, will chirp about no three second rule, and also complain about the rims or backboards not being regulation all while smelling like Bengay.

And Thorn also mentioned that Costas wore headbands, wristbands, and full pants. Fucking psycho, Chip Douglas shit. If I had to bet my life on it, I would say that Costas made the fake crowd noise sound when he hit a shot and counted every point, rebound, and assist he tallied in a game. If you would have asked me before today who would be the worst person to play pick-up basketball with, there is a good chance I would have said Bob Costas. Now I think he’s an absolute lock as the pick.
