Yoan Moncada Crushed A Home Run And Was Named The MVP Of The MLB Futures Game
Last week, I wrote about Yoan Moncada, and how fans who have never seen him play are much more likely to be comfortable with Dave Dombrowski including him in a trade for starting pitching. Well, what about now? Moncada played in the MLB Futures Game, which was nationally broadcasted on the MLB Network last night, crushed this monster home run, and was named as the MLB Futures Game Most Valuable Player. After that home run, I have never before gotten more tweets with the central message being that Moncada should be untouchable. Oh, nowwwwwww he’s untouchable? It’s funny how the Twitter GMs change their opinions after they, you know, actually watch the player play.
Moncada should be, and likely is, untouchable, and it’s not just because of one Futures Game home run. I’ve written this before, but the ONLY player you consider moving Moncada for in a trade is Jose Fernandez. And even then, I’d have to think long and hard about it, because Moncada is only a year away. It remains to be seen where he’ll play, either third base or maybe an outfield position, but he’s coming in 2017. It’s not like one of those prospects where you say fuck it, he’s years away, let’s get a player who can help us out now. No. He’ll be mashing those home runs at Fenway Park as early as next season, and six years of Moncada are worth more than two years of Fernandez.
So, that’s the type of player we’re talking about here, where you’re hesitant to move him for the best young pitcher in the game. As I’ve said before, the only way that makes sense for the Red Sox is if you’re able to extend Fernandez, which is highly unlikely given that he’s a Boras client, in addition to the fact you’re talking about a potentially record-breaking contract.
For now, let’s just enjoy that Moncada is one of the best, if not the best, prospect in baseball, and he belongs to the Boston Red Sox. Not only that, but he’ll be here soon.
