Flyers Sign Dale Weise For 4 Years, $9.4 Million

Listen. Do I necessarily LOVE signing Dale Weise for 4 years? No, not exactly. But hardly are you ever going to have a signing on July 1st that makes everybody happy. Hell, I’d say aside from the Eric Staal signing in Minnesota so far today, every single move has been made by a drunk general manager. But do the Flyers immediately get better by adding Dale Weise to the mix? Yes. Yes they most certainly do. Because what Dale Weise is, is a decently premium upgrade from Ryan White. Now don’t get me wrong. I love Ryan White. I think his energy is great and he’s fun to root for. But the fact of the matter is that Dale Weise is better. He’s better offensively, he’s better defensively. For $2.35 AAV, I’ll take it.

What Dale Weise brings to the table is even more depth. It makes sense to have Weise on the 4th line but he has the versatility to get the occasional 2nd and 3rd line minutes. The Flyers are working on getting as many 2-way guys as they can. Dale Weise is that guy. He can kill penalties. He adds that net front presence the 4th line needs to be successful in the offensive zone, and will help out tremendously with the 4th line’s possession numbers. In every way possible, he’s an upgrade from Ryan White. I’m not going to say that 4×2.35 doesn’t seem like a bit of an overpayment. But I’m sure the Flyers are looking at the salary cap going up in a couple of years. I’m sure there’s always a chance Weise could be on the move at the Expansion Draft next summer. So while it doesn’t look PHENOMENAL right now, I think this will end up being a very beneficial signing for both he Flyers and Dale Weise.

And like I said in the Live Blog, you don’t have to worry about any locker room issues with that guy because he will certainly not be banging anybody’s wife.
