Etiquette Is Dead: Bride Uses Email To Tell Friend Her Wedding Gift Sucked Instead Of Sending Her A Handwritten Note
A woman in England went to her co-workers wedding and brought along a check for £100 (approximately $150 in real money) as a gift for the happy couple. Apparently this didn’t sit well with the Bride who had hoped for a little bit more then 100 quid or bits or whatever, so she wrote the guest an email saying:
“We were surprised that your contribution didn’t seem to match the warmth of your good wishes on our big day. In view of your own position, if you wanted to send any adjustment it would be thankfully received”
Quick ettiquette primer here: Gently asking a guest at your wedding to add a zero to their check is understandable. Classic case of “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” But doing it in an email is the tackiest thing imaginable. Its just so impersonal. This is a wedding, it’s supposed to be a classy affair so if your going to admonish your friend for being a stingy bitch you need to crack open a fucking etiquette book, grab some stationary, write it down with a pen, seal it with wax, and have it delivered by hand like a civilized person. This is whats wrong with the world today- people are so consumed in their electronics that they’d rather send a glorified Nigerian Prince email from their iWatch than write an actual letter demanding a chunk of their friends inheritence.
PS for the youngsters out there: Instead of writing the bride and groom a check for $100 at a wedding, just buy something slightly less expensive on their registry ahead of time. Its easier and you can get away with spending less money. $75 on registry item converts to a $200 cash gift so just buy them a real nice crock pot and leave the checkbook at home.
