Orioles Open Their Checkbook and Make Chris Davis A Very Wealthy Man, Sign Him for 7-Years, $161 Million
HEEEEE’S BACKKKKKKKK, Orioles fans wake up to great news, Davis is coming back for 7-years, $161 million, $23 million per year. Scott Boras got him the whole deal too, no-trade clause, and no opt-outs (He does not have a full no-trade clause According to Roch Kubatko, still working out details on how many teams he can be traded to). Davis is getting paid. Many O’s fans thought they wouldn’t bring back ANY of their six free agents, Chen, O’Day, Parra, Pearce, Davis, Wieters. Well they brought back the best three. This team wants to win NOW, and this move shows it. So if you are one of those Nestor followers who swears that Angelos has it out for the O’s and doesn’t care, shove one.
The god damn President of #DongCity is back. David Price, Ivan Nova, Tanaka, they all shit themselves when they read this news. What confuses me is how the offer went up? Last we heard was the deal for 7-years, $150 million, and now it’s $161 million? Were they negotiating against themselves, likely. But just when they seem to be out on Chris, and shifting all their attention to Yoenis Cespedes, they scoop up what they wanted all along.
I like the deal though. Davis isn’t even 30, has hit 159 homers since 2012, and has developed into one of the best first baseman in the league, no doubt about it. Is $161 million a lot? Yes, but that is what you are going to have to pay to keep a legit superstar on your team. I know he won’t want to, but Davis can play more than just first base. He’s been decent at third, and was not really that bad in right when he played next year. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see a combo of Davis in right, Trumbo at first, or Wieters even play some first. Guess we will see what Buck cooks up.
Looks like the Orioles are out on Cespedes, and now the only things left to do is add a starter, and find someone for RF, besides that, I am pretty happy with the Orioles offseason. Cespedes would have been nice to have out in the outfield, but at the end of the day, I wanted the Deputy out there at first. Davis was an outcast in Texas, and the O’s gave him a chance to be an everyday player, and he rewarded them with becoming one of the best players in baseball, now they are rewarding him for that. Give me Opening Day now, need to watch Davis and the rest of the boys head back to #DongCity.
