Is Ben McAdoo Ready For This?
Why now though? I think once the coaching search became a reality, fans realized the resume everyone wanted belonged to the guy they already had. I understand when the Giants hired Ben McAdoo as OC there was potential for him to be Coughlin’s successor – but I doubt it was a two-year plan. In a perfect world there would’ve been a little more grooming, and the G-Men had the pieces in place to do so for another year. Did Tom Coughlin turn into SUCH a bad coach the Giants would rather cross their fingers & hope McAdoo is ready? Apparently the Giants think so.
I don’t. I think the team, primarily defensively, stunk. Sure he had his brain farts but Coughlin was far from the sole reason a bad team played bad. Someone had to take the fall though, and because of that Big Blue are now in the hands of a guy with 2 years of play-calling experience who’s 3 years older than the QB he called them for. I’m not saying it can’t work out. All I’m saying is that it’s a much bigger risk than the Giants usually take and, barring some big-time improvements to the roster, McAdoo is being asked to do the impossible for his opening act.
Maybe that’s the reasoning. Maybe it doesn’t matter who the head coach is for the immediate future, so why not make TC the fall guy while keeping everyone else on the staff & let McAdoo’s “grooming” become on-the-job training. They keep him from potentially jumping ship by accepting the first outside job he’s offered while holding out hope he’ll be what Bill Cowher was to the Steelers when he got the gig in his mid-30’s. We’ll see. If Eli’s happy though, then so am I – even though ODB’s had way more of an impact on his recent success than BMD. I just think the change they painted themselves into a corner to make early is a change that’ll have the least impact on turning this franchise around. Meanwhile…
