Sunday Was The Wildest Day in Ole Miss Football History
Hard to even comprehend everything that went down today in Oxford, Mississippi but let's do our best.
Lane Kiffin flew to Baton Rouge to be the next LSU Tigers coach & had quite the exit from Oxford….
On the way out, it got REALLY UGLY.
Ole Miss knew what they signed up for when they hired Lane in December of 2019. I honestly expected 2-3 years and ended up getting 6 amazing ones.
But damn did he make it hard to see that on the way out! All Lane had to do was say he was grateful to Ole Miss and understood why Athletic Director Keith Carter decided he should not coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoffs ESP because he decided to leave for an arch rival in LSU.
But that was too much for Lane…..
Lane Kiffin posted this message on Twitter and got rightfully cooked on the way out by none other than Dave Portnoy.
Dave also texted me this morning with this Barstool Store link and told me to "Get On It". Angry Rebel fans, please feel free to support us & buy a hoodie or shirt. I will definitely be rockin' them soon and they are 20% off through Cyber Monday in the Barstool Sports Store.
When the smoke cleared, Ole Miss Defensive Co-Ordinator Pete Golding was promoted to head coach, Given the circumstances, I am all for it…..
Here are the reasons why this was the right move by Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter…..
1) College Football Playoffs
Lane Kiffin was sent two planes by LSU on Sunday Morning to take staff and family with him to Baton Rouge. Ole Miss absolutely had to do EVERYTHING in its power to keep the coaching staff from getting raided to have a shot in the playoffs.
And for the most part, the Rebs came out ahead. Chris Kffin, GM Billy Glasscock & the strength coach are gone. The biggest bummer is Ole Miss OC Charlie Weis ended up on that plane too but there is still speculation he could stay after receiving a big money offer from Ole Miss.
The Golding hire was met with thunderous approval from Ole Miss players to keep morale high.
2) Continuity
Pete Golding is an ace recruiter. By keeping the staff together, the money will still flow through the Grove Collective and the 2026 Rebels will have a loaded roster. Bringing in an outsider opens up a whole can of worms with hungry college football teams looking to poach everyone in the transfer portal era. It would have killed any shot the Rebels had in the playoffs.
And let's be real…. the playoffs are more of a priority than next season.
3) Pete LOVES Ole Miss.
Lane Kiffin clearly did not. It is imperative to hire a true Rebel to galvanize the fan base in this absurd time.
Other than Weis getting on the plane, today went as well as it possibly could. This is the messiest divorce after 6 years that I can ever recall in sports history. The fact that Lane Kiffin really thought he could coach the playoffs after going to LSU has nuked my brain.
ESPN running propaganda through his agent Jimmy Sexton only poured gas onto the fire of an untenable situation.
What's next for Ole Miss?
The Rebels are going to end up as the #7 or #8 seed and still will host a home playoff game December 19th or 20th. It depends on if Alabama beats Georgia in the SEC Title Game to leapfrog them.
They are not in danger of falling below #8 after keeping the roster together and most of the staff despite Kiffin leaving by virtue of an 11-1 record and winning at Oklahoma.
There are still 20 days until the Playoff Game. Time to hit the practice field without Lane Kifffin to prove that the show goes on even in the strangest situation….
