The NFL Knows The New Onside Kick Rules Are A Failure, Reportedly Are Considering Changing It To 'A Single Offensive Play To Retain Possession'

Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession.

There's no other way to put it. The current onside kick rules suck. The whole element of surprise is gone considering you have to announce it, can only be done in the 4th quarter and trailing and all the other stuff. So consider this a free idea to the NFL. What if ... what if we just had regular onside kicks again? You remember those, right? You just did an onside kick. You didn't have to have players declare it was coming or change where they had to lineup. You just did this: 

The 'one offensive play to retain possession' sounds cool, but come on. How gimmicky do we need sports to get? We spent years with the onside kick just being a thing and no one complained about it. It's not like we all sat down and said, you know what we need? A 4th and 15 play to get the ball back. I'm speaking strictly as a fan here. Give me the hands team out there guessing when an onside kick is coming and give me a kicker properly hitting that big bounce before it's mayhem. If we're going to do something dumb, why not do the XFL coin toss rule to retain possession?

I'm sure that'll be flawless like the one year you could challenge pass interference. Refs love admitting they were awful at their job and missed an obvious call. Plus, do we trust replay assist to jump in all the time? But, this is an onside kick blog. Just bring back regular onside kicks. Seems simple.
