Austin Butler Will Play Patrick Bateman In The Upcoming 'American Psycho' Movie
Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino‘s new interpretation of the book “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate.
While there had been persistent rumors that the part went to Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”), it turns out that it’s gone to Butler. Elordi and Butler have something in common, having both played very different versions of Elvis in movies by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann, respectively.
The film, which features a script by Scott Z. Burns (“The Laundromat”), will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel.
'American Psycho' is a pretty interesting movie. Its a takedown of the hyper-masculine finance bro world that was written by a gay man and directed by a woman but it has been essentially adopted by the whole sigma-pilled movement or whatever the hell you want to call it. Makes no sense, but that's movies baby!
It's also not a film that I think is screaming for a remake but there are defienitly some updates that I'm sure Hollywood would love to sew in like crypto, shitcoins etc. And, as probably the #1 director of gay movies, Luca Guadagnino is probably a safe bet to adapt it. That said, I'm not sure how to feel about Austin Butler as Patrick Bateman. On the one hand, I think he could easily play a hot serial killer. Just picture Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen with slicked back hair and a Patagonia vest. On the other hand, Christian Bale was just so perfect in the role and is just on another plane of existence from an acting perspective that I don't know how you match his performance. This is a new adaptation and not a remake, meaning Butler can really blaze his own trail here, but still.
And on the rare third hand, I am terrified of what this will mean for Butler's off the court bullshit after what happened with Elvis. What goofy ass accent are we going to be stuck with for 2 years? Is he going to be method acting by living in Murray Hill for a few years and regurgitating Andrew Huberman clips? Maybe starting a side-business within his firm selling Rosè? I don't know and I don't want to find out. I'd rather the superior Elvis, Jacob Elordi, have gotten this role. He has that psycho energy as well but is a lot more bearable.
