Georgia Escapes Past Georgia Tech in 8OT Thanks to Brent Key's Play Calling, For Which He Should Be Imprisoned
I want Brent Key in jail. Georgia Tech ran the ball 47 times for 260 yards throughout this game and then the Yellow Jackets got to college football's two-point-off beginning in triple overtime and thought it needed to start running the air raid. I've never seen anything like it.
Tech should have won that game about 10 times. They failed to capitalize on several opportunities early in the game that would have ended things in regulation without any fuss, but what happened in OT is just batshit insane. You have a battering ram at QB and are rolling him out with two receivers running routes from the 3-yard line. I guess the only silver lining is Key kicking the extra point in the first OT instead of going for the win was actually the right call after seeing the two-point plays he had in his back pocket.
At the end of the day, though, Tech was up 14 points with just over four minutes to go and that game should have never gone to overtime to begin with. The choke job of even giving UGA a chance was overshadowed infinitely by the play calling once it got there.
I had an entirely different blog written about Georgia suddenly having to win the SEC Championship Game to make the College Football Playoff, but they can thank Brent Key for that no longer being the case. I think Key is an outstanding coach to even have Tech in a position to win that game, but losing like that when the Bulldogs gave you a plethora of chances in Athens is painful.
The win probability chart would make a great rollercoaster, though.
