A Wicked Disappointment

I saw Wicked tonight. I will say, it was very cool to be in a sold out theatre on opening night. But my excitement ended there. A few key tidbits about the movie Wicked, which I was blissfully unaware.

The movie is a musical, so be prepared for lots of singing. 

I knew it was a broadway play. I lived near it for several years in New York City. Never really even considered going to see it. Figured it wasn't my speed. Boy was I right.

I will say, the Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have great voices. Not knocking them. That being said, I didn't think the songs, outside of the one used in the finale, were that great or catchy even.

My main takeaway, and our real movie guy, Jeff D. Lowe put it well in his review, was that if you're not into musicals, this probably isn't for you. 

He was spot on there, because I honestly didn't like it. I can see how a person would like it. My wife loved it. But it was a bit too fantastical with not enough storyline. For a movie that was 2 hours and 40 minutes to not have a well built story is crazy to me. They spent far too much time building up the Witch's visit to Oz and seemed to kind of rush through that. It's also part one of a two part movie. 

I think if you're looking for an entertaining movie with a good storyline and great acting, this movie isn't for you. But if you're into big theatrics or a fan of the Broadway play, you'll probably like it. That being said, this movie wasn't something I really enjoyed. I give it a 4.1/10.
