The Most Powerful Curse In College Basketball: Kansas Is Ranked No. 1 In The AP Top-25 Poll, History Says Its Season Is Going To End In A Disaster
Today is another sign that we're in college basketball season - the drop of the preseason AP poll. In other words it's a chance for fans to scream about people who don't watch games ranking their teams. It's completely irrelevant. There's no purpose to the AP poll besides a graphic. Hilarious it drops 12 hours after KenPom's rankings, which are wildly more respected than anything the AP does. Now, I say all that to set up that maybe one part is relevant. There's one part that matters and that is the Kansas curse:
Look, one or two times and we can rule out a curse. But we have 4 examples of Kansas being ranked number 1 in the country and not getting out of the first round of the Tournament. I am now stuck thinking that Kansas is cursed. I refuse to let my dumb brain think otherwise, even if Kansas is deservedly ranked number 1. They are going to be good, Hunter Dickinson is still in college, Self is still a good coach. All that stuff. Also a huge fan of Zeke Mayo transferring in, that dude can score. Seriously look at their roster and you can understand why they are number 1. Bring in Mayo/AJ Storr/Shakeel Moore/Rylan Griffen from the portal while keeping Harris, Dickinson and Adams. The argument is fair and basically everyone has them top-5 regardless.
But now we gotta put this is the tickler file when it comes to futures and March. Again, I know how dumb this all is, especially when we're talking about the NCAA Tournament. It's the best and dumbest event in all of sports and it's why it's perfect. But we're talking about not getting out of the first weekend. That's significant!
I do blame the AP voters for this though. We all gotta agree to stop being dumb and giving ammo. Just rank UConn number 1 in the preseason after they win a title and Dan Hurley is their coach. He'll find a way to complain, but let's avoid the free mental warfare he now can use.
