Rashee Rice's Tough Year Continues as His Mom is Allegedly Caught on Camera Committing Porch Piracy in a Custom 'Momma-Rice' Jersey

Possibly my favorite line from Slap Shot is before the final game when Jim Carr is introducing the Syracuse Bulldogs and he says, "Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, well, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle… Ogie Ogilthorpe!" It's a good one to keep in the back pocket of your brain to use any time a young athlete comes along who keeps making news for all the wrong reasons.

And in his second season at the age of 24, Rashee Rice has most definitely crossed over into Ogie Oglithorpe territory. A year that began with him winning a Super Bowl as a rookie quickly turned into notoriety:

… and litigation:

And on the field, his season appears to be over after losing his knee to a friendly fire incident:

And while Patrick Mahomes was hyperextending Rice's knee, his mother was extending his streak of bad stuff happening to him. Allegedly:

Source - Rashee Rice's mother is being accused of swiping a package containing Chappell Roan records right from her neighbor's porch just hours after the Kansas City Chiefs receiver went down with an injury on Sunday … and the neighbor says it was all captured on video.

TMZ Sports has obtained Ring footage of what one Texas resident claims shows Marsha Kearney -- wearing a custom "Momma-Rice" No. 4 jersey -- walk by their doorway and look right into the camera before walking down the hall around 6:39 PM CT on September 29, a few hours after the Chiefs defeated the Chargers in Los Angeles.

You can see the woman in the jersey then made her way back to the door, slid a package sitting on the ground with her foot and moved it out of frame (or so she thought).

But she apparently didn't travel far enough … and the footage shows her turn around and lift a box from her feet before walking away.

According to TMZ, police have confirmed that a complaint has been filed.

And while I'm only too happy to include all the qualifying adverbs like "allegedly" and "reportedly" that make our legal department smile their little lawyerly smiles, NFL Shop can't have sold too many Chiefs No. 4 "Momma-Rice" jerseys. Unless they were home and away versions. Then there's the reports that she supposedly (another adverb for the attorneys) posted herself wearing that same merch earlier in the day:

So it would appear that this is as close to open-and-shut cases as cases get. I mean, when you get caught red handed this obviously, we can call off CSI: Dallas or the meddling kids in the Mystery Machine. This Ocean's 11-style caper has been solved.

The Rice family's lawyers might prefer that we not talk about the (alleged) porch piracy so much and try to focus on all the good she's done. Like raising a fine young man who takes accountability for his mistakes. Which is fair. And besides, while I don't excuse petty theft like this, who among us wouldn't at least consider entering a life of crime when the payoff is Chappell Roan vinyl? That's a powerful temptation to have right there laying at your feet. I'm more of a Yacht Rock guy. And I prefer it in easily accessible playlists on my phone. But I can certainly understand the motivation to steal when the reward is so great.

Anyway, it was a tough day all around for the Rice family. Towards the end of a very tough year for them in general. The good news is Rashee and Marsha will have a lot more time to spend together, spinning Chappell Roan albums, and hopefully doing a little soul-searching.
