Mike McDaniel Concedes the Dolphins are Looking for a QB. Might I Suggest the Obvious Choice, Mac Jones?

Mike McDaniel spoke to the media this morning. And while he wisely prioritized Tua Tagovailoa's health above all other issues and deftly avoided putting any sort of time frame on when we'll know whether his quarterback has any sort of a future in football, he did admit that the Dolphins suddenly find themselves in the Signal Caller Market:

Source - Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s Friday morning press conference was centered on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s condition and future after he suffered a concussion in Thursday night’s loss to the Bills, but there were also discussions about how the team will be moving forward while waiting for answers on those fronts. 

Skylar Thompson replaced Tagovailoa on Thursday night and is the only other quarterback on the 53-man roster. Tim Boyle is on the practice squad, but McDaniel said he expects there to be another option in the mix soon. 

“We will bring in someone, we’re just evaluating the pros and cons for the different situations,” McDaniel said. 

We can all empathize with a coach dealing with a huge injury to a star player. A condition as frightening and potentially tragic as chronic concussions, no less. So while it's against my nature to offer helpful advice to a divisional opponent, especially one that's beaten my team 7 out of the last 8 games, now is not the time for such pettiness. Now is the time to put rivalries aside and be a human being. To try to do right by others in the spirit of Christian and AFC East fellowship. 

Just because this jagoff tampered with Tom Brady in early 2019 while he was still under contract to New England and is as crooked as a corkscrew:

… shouldn't prevent any of us from offering the perfect solution to Miami's problem:

Sure, it hasn't all been smooth sailing and steady winds before a following sea in Mac Jones' career. And even his short stint in Jacksonville has had an issue or two:

But in the preseason, he had one of the better performances of all quarterbacks in the league. With a 38-for-52. A 73.1 completion % that was fourth among all passers with at least 25 dropbacks. A passer rating of 115.9 that was fifth highest, plus 3 TDs to 0 INTs. Skylar Thompson (whose name sounds like the football captain who's a douchebag to all the regular kids in a teen movie), was 43rd in completion %, 37th in passer ratings and threw two picks to go with his 3 TDs. 

Moreover, Jones came up in the same system as Tagovailoa and played with Jaylen Waddle. McDaniel was able to rescue Tua from 1st Round Bust status two seasons into his career. Coaching him up to the league in passer rating in his third and in yards in his fourth. Jones is technically entering his fourth. But with just 42 starts, putting him roughly in the same stage of his career where Tagovailoa was when McDaniels was brought in to Dumbledore him along his professional journey.

A trade from Jacksonville to Miami just seems to perfect to not happen. Everyone has the potential to benefit. First of all, he can be had relatively cheaply. The Jaguars only gave up a 6th rounder to get him. He's never going to be the QB1 over Trevor Lawrence. Jones has been damaged goods ever since the 2022 Matt Patricia/Joe Judge debacle. And while Bill O'Brien's mentorship didn't work out any better in 2023, Jones wasn't throwing to one of the best wide receiver tandems in the league like he will in Miami. Not to mention, he wears the shit out of tourquoise:

As a Patriots fan, I'm reluctant to see the Dolphins do anything that can help them. But at the same time, I wanted the Pats to draft Jones. For one brief shining moment, he was filling the GOAT-shaped hole in my soul before it all came crashing down around his helmet. And on some level, I'd enjoy watching a redemption arc out of him. Plus watching him try and exact revenge on the team that gave up on him will bring a rivalry that hasn't felt like much in a long time back to its former glory for two games a year.
