NICK SABAN RETIRES

WOW. HOLY SHIT. HE'S OUT.

Obviously everyone knew this day would come at some point, but I certainly didn't think it was going to be today. I actually thought there was a good chance Nick Saban would really consider retirement if he was able to lead this Alabama team to a national title after how it started the season and then coming all the way back to beat Georgia and make the College Football Playoff, but that thought definitely never entered my head after the Crimson Tide's loss to Michigan.

While this man has caused myself and millions of other people emotional torment for many years, there's simply no denying he's the best coach in the history of college football. Kirby Smart has a real chance to usurp that title with what he's doing at such a relatively young age, but he has miles and miles to go before catching Saban. Seven national championships and 11 SEC championships is something we may never see again.

And now Saban has left the void people have been talking about for years at what has been the best program in college football for the better part of the last two decades. I don't know that Dabo Swinney is in the conversation to take over in Tuscaloosa anymore. Do they look to Lane Kiffin? Steve Sarkisian? Dan Lanning? This will be the most fascinating hire in the sport this century.

Congrats to Coach Saban, though. I hope he enjoys some Oatmeal Cream Pies on the lake for the next few years and never entertains coaching again.
