The 39th Annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival Is Some Scene... But I Have Some Questions

UPI News--- Divers donned mermaid tails and ventured underwater with musical instruments for the 39th annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival at Looe Key Reef in Florida.

The Florida Keys & Key West said in a Facebook post that the undersea concert featured the mermaid performers miming with their instruments while real music was pumped into the area via underwater speakers by US1Radio.

The songs played under the water during the mock concert included "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, "Fins" by Jimmy Buffet" and songs from the films Pirates of the Caribbean and The Little Mermaid.

The annual event raises awareness of the need to protect Looe Key Reef, an area of the NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

First off ... great to raise awareness to protect Looe Key Reef (which I'm sure is important). So commend all these divers for their efforts, and 39 years is nothing to sniff at. Gotta give them props . However on the other hand ... we gotta critique this just a little bit right ? 

When I first saw this (maybe I'm a complete dope) I was amazed that you could play instruments under water. I was wondering how it's even possible to do that and hear anything because I have been trying to hear myself fart underwater for 30+ years. I thought these divers had created some sort of amazing world where you could hear music.  I wanted to give them a Nobel Prize. Then I examined that it was in fact "miming" of the instruments and the actual music being pumped in via underwater speakers. 

This leads me to a few questions … the first is who thought of playing music underwater in the first place ? The next being how did they do this in the days before waterproof bluetooth speakers ? And my biggest question being … can these divers in fact even play these instruments since you can't hear them anyway ? If there's no sound coming out anyone can go down there and make it look like they are playing an instrument … hell the Partridge family did it their entire run on TV. 

I don't think it really matters one way or the other, but I have to call this bullshit that they aren't musician divers and instead just divers who are pretending to be musicians. Although maybe the community of divers just doesn't have musically talented people, and maybe the community of musicians never learned to dive. Regardless, I find it a little bullshit that they faked this thing to an extent. I also find it bullshit we can't play music underwater … or at least hear ourselves fart. 

PS- Good music selection. I know one guy who loved the Buffett choice.
