Yankees Take 2 of 3 And Get Back To First
TORONTO — On the dry erase board in the visitors clubhouse Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Centre, someone scrawled the following message: “Cheer up errebody (sic). Won the series. Still in first place.”
The author of the quote was not identified, but the meaning was clear: Taking two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays and heading home back atop the AL East was a pretty good weekend’s work.
That message on that white board is all that matters right now. Yeah, yesterday was a winnable game that all fell apart because of the sun but we won the series. All season I’ve been saying that if was can just go out there and win series, there wont be any reason we shouldn’t win this division. The bats showed up in a clutch way, starting with Beltran on Friday, so we’ll give him a pass on the fly ball, and continued into Saturday with the bats showing real signs of life. Only scoring 1 run of a guy with a 5+ era wasn’t ideal, but he just pitches well at home, going 10-1 in Toronto.
Over the rest of the season, the Yankees play a majority of their games at home, where they are 11 games over .500. An underrated part of this season is how many road games were played in the first half, with this older team and the fact that they were able to stay in contention. Now they get to spend time sleeping in their own beds, not boarding planes and can get to work on wrapping up this division. That start tonight with Minnesota, who we traditionally dominate, coming to town. This should be an easy series win to start off a home stand.
Win series, win pennants. That’s the name of the game.
