Dabo Swinney Bans All Clemson Players From Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat

CLEMSON No Twitter.

No Facebook.

No Instagram.

No Snapchat.

So how in the world are Eric Mac Lain and D.J. Reader going to function without social media?

“A big piece of my life has been removed,” Mac Lain admitted.

“That’s how I get most of my information about the world,” Reader said.

The Clemson football team’s social media shutdown went into effect on Aug. 3, the first day of fall camp. Players are forbidden from being active on them until season’s end.

“It’s good that we shut it down,” Mac Lain, who as @mr_clemson has 2,098 Twitter followers. “I love interacting with people and it’s a great way to build our brand, but during the season you don’t need any of that. When something bad happens, people are going to come at you from all angles, which is unfortunate. You don’t need that negativity.”

Live look at Dabo Swinney vs. Twitter

Listen I get that social media is a HUGE problem for programs to deal with, especially a football team that has what, 100+ players on a roster? 100 guys each with their own Twitter, Instagram and Facebook account, each with their own fans and groupies and trolls – 18-20 year old dumbasses (we’re all dumbasses at that age) with quick tempers who might not know how to hold their tongue. But that’s kind of your job as coach right? To teach your kids how to act with this kind of stuff? To prepare them for being adults and, in a lot of cases, to be professional athletes? Just seems like imposing an all-out Gestapo like ban on your entire team is taking it to an extreme.

Although, after seeing years and years of these college athlete tweets pile up, wondering each time how somebody could possibly be this stupid, I guess I can’t blame one of them for finally saying fuck it, shut the Twitters down.

And far be it from me to tell a G like Dabo how to run his program.
