OBJ Says "I Don't See The Point" About Playing In The Regular Season After His Bachelorette Style Attempt At Getting Signed During The Regular Season Fails
A sad day for the former NFL superstar turned social media influencer. Backtracking like a dude who was just denied when asking to take a chick on a date.
You want to hang out later?
No?
It's cool. I actually have a bunch of work to finish tonight anyway.
It was literally four days ago that OBJ was on his third date of Bachelorette: NFL Free Agent Edition. He and a few of the Cowboys players sat court side at a Mavericks game dressed to the nines and yucking it up in front of the cameras. Could this be true love? Will the Cowboys offer him this rose?
Tough scene.
I understand it is probably a blow to the OBJ's massive ego to publicly flirt with the Bills, Giants, and Cowboys only to have none of them make an offer. But no one believes you don't see the point in playing in the regular season. You don't want to play in the regular season? Sure. But you definitely see the point otherwise you wouldn't have been homie-hopping from organization to organization the last 10 days.
His success with the Rams last season was an aberration. A perfect storm of circumstances.
They were going all in on a Super Bowl and figured they would take a flyer after he was released from Cleveland. Then Robert Woods goes down with a season-ending knee injury, which opened the door for OBJ to get plenty of snaps. But in his eight regular season games for the Rams OBJ only caught 18 balls for 305 yards. He did have 5 TDs so he was a decent red zone target to be sure but a shadow of his former self overall.
Then in the playoffs Stafford looked to OBJ often as Cooper Kupp commanded double teams on nearly every play. He caught 21 balls for 288 yards and 2 TDs.
I would rather play when that pressure is on. I'd rather play when the lights is on.
Yeah buddy, you and every other NFL vet. No one wants to go through training camp, a grueling 18 week season, and then pray you are healthy enough to play in the tournament that decides the champion of the league. But for any team to consider letting you do that would mean they believe you are still a transcendent talent. He is not.
Not every team has a Cooper Kupp. Not every team is all in on a Super Bowl but still somehow needs a wide receiver. Not every team wants to put up with the media attention a role player would bring. And he is a role player at this point in his career.
So the point of playing in the regular season is that you actually have a job for the postseason. You know the play book and have chemistry with the quarterback. You will be ready when the lights are brightest as you say.
Undoubtedly someone will take a flyer on OBJ again, whether it is this postseason or beyond. But the chances he makes the same impact he did in LA are slim. And if he wants to elongate his career, he's going to find himself in training camp next year getting ready for the thing he just publicly said doesn't matter to him: The regular season.
