The First Trailer For The Kate McKinnon's Carole Baskin Series Is TOUGH
Based on the second season of Wondery's "Over My Dead Body" podcast, Carole Baskin, a big-cat rescuer, commences a crusade to end GW Zoo owner Joe Exotic's animal shows and cub-breeding business. When Joe's livelihood is threatened, he retaliates, inciting a 10-year feud between the two big-cat lovers that finds them becoming sworn enemies. With the past informing the present, Carole and Joe's fight is messy, vicious and outrageous, ultimately ending in an attempted murder.
Does Kate McKinnon look/sound like Baskin? Yes. Does John Cameron Mitchell look/sound like Joe Exotic? Yes. Is the show from a talented writer/producer? Yes. So this should be a good series, right?
Well...No. And I'll tell you why even though you already know.
Nobody gives a shit about the Tiger King anymore. It was a weird/stupid doc that happened to hit right at the start of quarantine when people were desperate for something to latch on to for some escapism. This coming out years after it's relevancy almost reminds me of that Netflix show 'Space Force'. The moment is gone! This sort of reactionary humor is best served by mediums that can give it a quick turnaround time like YouTube, SNL etc. Even if they do it poorly(which is likely) at least they strike when the iron is still hot.
Beyond that, I also want to note that I have just had such a distaste of Kate McKinnon's roles over the past 5+ years. When she first came on the scene with SNL, I thought she was pretty damn funny and that she was going to help bump the digital short era that both me and a lot of you loved. Over time, though, I feel like SNL turned her into almost a dancing bear of bad impressions and kooky, out of time characters. That carried over into a lot of the movie roles she got as well, where she seemingly only got cast as a loud weirdo. I would love to see a return to form for her, but I don't think this is it.
As far as the rest of the cast goes, prayers up for my LCB cohost who is going to go through another round of people tweeting him about the Tiger King universe's Jeff Lowe. At least he is being played by Dean Winters, who is a sneakily underrated actor if you ask me.
