The USFL Will Play Its First Season In Alabama
Spring football is back! The USFL will return for the 2022 season with all games being played in Birmingham, AL. A single host city makes sense for an upstart league. It minimizes travel costs, eliminates paying rent for multiple stadiums, and with it being in Alabama, there won't be any Covid issues. Past football leagues, like the UFL and AAF, have had to stop play during the season because they have run out of money. A host city should ensure that doesn't happen.
The host city stadium, Legion field or "The Old Gray Lady", has a rich history. The Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn was played here from 1948 to 1987. The game was actually called the Iron Bowl because of the iron and steel manufacturing of Birmingham. Many professional football games have been played here as well. In 1968, The Boston Patriots played a home game against the New York Jets at Legion Field.
This first season will feature 8 teams, all reclaiming the identities of former USFL teams. Until the Jacksonville Bulls return, I'll be cheering on the New Jersey Generals. Who are you rooting for?
First game is April 16th featuring the Birmingham Stallions and the New Jersey Generals. Something tells me there will be a few Units in the stands.
