'Parasite' Director Bong Joon Ho Is Teaming Up With Robert Pattinson For A Sci-fi Movie
After taking nearly two years to figure out his next project following his Oscar sweep at the 2020 Academy Awards, Parasite director Bong Joon Ho looks to have found his next film and is taking a certain Caped Crusader along for the ride. Sources tell deadline, Bong is in talks to write and direct an Untitled film based on Edward Ashton’s upcoming novel Mickey7 for Warner Bros. and that The Batman star Robert Pattinson is in talks to star. Bong will also produce the untitled film for his production company Offscreen alongside Dooho Choi for Kate Street Picture Company as will Plan B.
The book will be published in 1Q ’22 by St. Martin (a Macmillan imprint). While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his iteration of the story might ultimately may be different from novel’s.
Here is the summary of the book, with a more detailed synopsis here.
The Martian meets Dark Matter in Edward Ashton's high concept science fiction thriller, in which Mickey7, an "expendable," refuses to let his replacement clone Mickey8 take his place.
The first comp I thought about after reading that synopsis was the 1998 Kurt Russell movie 'Soldier', which was about a futuristic soldier being phased out for a newer model. I love this idea and I really like basically every person and company involved in this. Starting at director, Bong is an insanely good director. He's one of the few that doesn't have a true miss.
By the way, don't let people forget that I called Parasite the best movie of 2019 months before it was even released. I wish that luck carried over into my parlay+ action, but that's life I guess.
Robert Pattinson has been doing a great job over the last 5 years to wipe off the stink of Twilight. He is a great actor and has me pumped up for his rendition of Batman. Warner Bros making it means it will get the budget it needs for the futuristic sci fi setting. Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B entertainment, producing is also a great sign. They've made some incredible stuff including Minari, If Beale Street Could Talk, Moonlight, The Big Short, Moneyball, Kick-Ass, The Departed and more.
Even though this movie is only a sperm in the small, sensitive balls of Hollywood, it is already shooting up to the top of my most anticipated movies list. By the way, if you are one of the people that is annoyed by the idea of Pattinson because of twilight, check out his recent work.
