BREAKING: Indiana Fires Archie Miller And Brad Stevens Still Isn't Going To Take The Job
There it is. Indiana decided to fire Archie Miller after four years and no NCAA Tournament appearances. Then again, that's sort of the norm for Indiana. Since they made the title game in 2002 they've made just 8 NCAA Tournaments. Dominant program baby. I am shocked that Archie didn't work out though, but it was an awful fit. What made Archie a good coach at Dayton was his ability to recruit guys for a specific role for multiple years. At Indiana he had to go after guys like Romeo Langford and fit both the top recruits and role players. He never was able to adjust offensively and it cost him in the Big 10. That said, he 100% will get another job and should be awesome at a mid-major.
Let's get straight to it. Brad Stevens isn't taking the Indiana job. Why would he want that? Yeah, he's an awesome coach and had a ton of success at Butler and is an Indiana guy but think about taking over that program. Fans would expect winning right away. He's also coaching in the NBA, there's a reason he left Butler for that. Indiana is still a top-15 or 20 job in the country, but it's not what it once was. They can't just go hire whoever they want.
So now the question is who the hell do they hire. There isn't a ton of great fits or obvious choices. Scott Drew will get a call, because he's an Indiana guy and had the best rebuild job in all of sports at Baylor. But he's also built Baylor into a better current program than Indiana. Why leave for that? He has a job for life at Baylor. Dane Fife? He played for Indiana, coached at IPFW and has been an assistant at Michigan State. He makes sense, but does Indiana want to go with a guy that has no high major head coaching experience? Chris Beard doesn't fit at all at Indiana, cross him off the list.
Then there's Nate Oats. That will be a name that Indiana fans immediately start to go after. But remember, he just signed a massive extension with Alabama, is paid a ton of money there and he loves Saban. It's not as simple as saying 'it's Indiana vs Alabama' with him. To me that's who they should try to go after though. As for mid-major names. Porter Moser is a name that will draw a ton of interest.
Either way, here we are and the coaching carousel is about to start. We'll see just what coaches think of the Indiana job by who they hire here. All I know is we're about to get a ton of Brad Stevens rumors and he ain't going to Bloomington.
PS: This is fucking ruthless. Thinking you have a job and bam you're fired. I guess $10 million helps you get over it though.
