Count Me Out On The Idea To Start Building Things Underwater, Such As This Tennis Court In Dubai

Source - After boasting of a tennis court high up in the air built atop the 1,000-foot-tall Burj al Arab hotel, Dubai has wooed an architect to test the waters for an underwater tennis court. Polish architect Krysztof Kotala has proposed to build an underwater tennis complex located offshore in the Persian Gulf, between the Burj al Arab and the Palm Jumeirah islands. Some of the hurdles include creating a single piece of glass large enough to cover the structure and strong enough to withstand the pressure of the water. It is being estimated that the transparent ceiling would require a continuous pane of glass measuring at least 108 feet-wide to accommodate the court and spectators. However Kotala is at ease with his ground-breaking plans and is not open to blow it out of the water, “This will be something original. It should be somewhere where there is the tradition of tennis. Dubai is perfect for this idea.”

Quite an idea, Dubai. Quite an idea. Maybe this is me being an old man, but I have no desire for them to start building things underwater like that. I’ve seen way too many movies to know that this is a bad idea. Only takes one mutated 100 foot long, 3 ton monster whale shark to get angry and Pete Sampras and co are dead. One second it’s 15-love, the next second the glass shatters and Stone Cold ain’t walkin through that door. We’ve tested fate a lot as humans. I mean isn’t it enough we get into airplanes and fly through the sky like damn birds? It still doesn’t make sense. And it’s every other day now an Asian plane slams into the Indian Ocean, and they’ve been flying planes since 1492. So yea, I’d prefer sports being played above ground. Let’s not reinvent the wheel here.
