'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' Is Getting a Remake...

Paramount Pictures has set a remake of the classic John Hughes 1987 road trip comedy Planes, Trains & Automobiles as a star vehicle for Will Smith and Kevin Hart. Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Smith’s Westbrook Studios will produce. In her feature debut, Aeysha Carr will write the script. Her TV credits include Brooklyn 99 and the upcoming Hulu series Woke.

Historically, I've never been a remake hater. I think if a director has a something great to add to an existing property, then power to them. But there is also a tier of classics that have absolutely no business being touched, and 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' is definitely in that tier for me.

I think it is objectively the best Thanksgiving movie, and also one of the best, if not THE best, buddy movies ever made. It's got 2 of the GOAT comedic minds in Steve Martin and John Candy near the height of their games bouncing off each other so god damn effortlessly! Not to mention this is probably the best John Hughes movie (no offense to Ferris and the Breakfast Club). Is there parts of it that are dating that could be updated to fit the 2020 travel experience? Sure, but WHY.

Giphy Images.

Logistically speaking, I don't even know how this movie is even going to work. Is Smith or Hart going to be the straight man? Neither of them are particularly good at "kooky" acting, if you want to call it that, and both of them are coming off a HARSH 5 year stretch at the start of 2020. This is the live-action movies they starred in during that period:

At least Hart had some certified fresh movies on there. Before 'Bad Boys for Life', which admittedly ruled, Will Smith hadn't had a certified fresh movie in TWO DECADES! Christ. I just don't know who wants this. It doesn't matter if it was those guys or 2 comedians at the peak of their game, this just shouldn't happen. I'm curious what Steve Martin thinks, but I I'd imagine he is unbothered, jammin out in a woods somewhere.
