Plus-Sized Lingerie Line Goes Hard With Anti-Victoria's Secret Ad Of Models Saying "I'm No Angel"

Cosmo – Lane Bryant’s latest ad campaign for its Cacique intimates line features six of the most in-demand women in the “plus-size” modeling world proclaiming “I’m no angel.”

The campaign slogan and accompanying hashtag are a not-so-subtle reference to the models who represent Victoria’s Secret’s Angels. The language and imagery stand in stark contrast to Victoria’s Secret’s recent “The Perfect ‘Body'” campaign, which was met with outrage and soon discontinued after it launched in November.

For comparison, here’s the controversial Victoria’s Secret ad that spurred it on:

So you see an ad like the Lane Bryant one above and honestly I do believe something like it should exist. There are fat people out there, they need clothes and sometimes sexy lingerie, more power to you working with what you’ve got. The problem I have is how insanely cocky it is with the whole #ImNoAngel gimmick, like it’s “taking the power back” from these professional models at the peak of their career who work for Victoria’s Secret. Yes, you are no Angel, but it’s not by choice. It’s not some empowering statement that you’re not 5’8 120 with D cups serving as jerk-off fodder and a fitness icon to girls trying to better themselves. It’s also not empowering for me that I’m not ripped and flawless like Chris Hemsworth because it shouldn’t be. Some people are just better than you. They’re better looking or they work out harder or they eat healthier foods. I didn’t have salmon and tomato salad for dinner last night because I want to be happy with mediocrity, I ate it because I’ve got hopes and dreams and don’t want to look like one of the remaining humans hovering around in Wall-E this summer. Loving yourself is great and all but loving yourself when you’re the best possible version of yourself is a BILLION TIMES BETTER.

Also note to the marketing people, watching the ad made me feel like I was watching something as absurdist as this classic Chris Farley SNL skit. That might not be the desired intent:
