Comedians Make Jokes For Their Audience. Other People Then Go Out Of Their Way To Try To Get Comedians Fired Because THEY Don't Like The Jokes
Seriously, we’re getting pissed off at a “Beats By Dreidel” joke now? Is this real life? I’m going to break this down real quick:
Comedians are people who are paid to make other people laugh by telling jokes. There are different types of comics: some use puppets and make dad jokes, some are dirty comics and make incest jokes. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like incest jokes, you should probably stay away from comics who tell that type of joke. Your opinion on how funny a comic is is irrelevant. There are people out there who think Trevor Noah is a shitty comedian. And that’s fine. But because you think he’s a shitty comedian doesn’t mean his jokes are offensive. There are also people out there who think Trevor Noah is funny enough to…I don’t know…take over the Daily Show from Jon Stewart. See how that works? A joke isn’t any more or any less offensive based on how funny one particular person finds the comedian.
And let’s talk about the word “offensive” to begin with. It’s a tricky subject. I see it like this, and it goes back to what a professional comedian is– a guy paid to tell jokes. Some comedians schtick is to be offensive. That’s how they make money, it’s their job. And frankly, they don’t give a fuck if you are offended by their comedy, because if you are, you’re not making them money. Get it? It’s just a weird job/kind of not real life. The easiest example I can give is Daniel Tosh. By all accounts, he’s a quiet, rather shy person in real life. On stage he is a pompous, arrogant comedian who makes what some people consider “offensive” jokes. I find him hilarious. Many people don’t. It’s just the way comedy works.
We even have a ton of readers of this website who cry “that’s offensive!” after we do blogs. I can give you an example from Friday. Do some people just not get what we do here? Are people just that sensitive to jokes? It’s so confusing. You can’t just pick and choose shit to be upset about. We’re a website where we pride ourselves as not being PC/not giving a fuck about what people think, but we have a bunch of readers who can’t handle it.
Ludacris pressured Comedy Central into pulling Paul Walker jokes from last night’s roast. Meanwhile, comedians made jokes about Davidson’s father dying on 9/11. And he laughed. And even made a joke about it himself. Because he’s a comic and he gets it.
So I guess the point is if you don’t like a comedian, don’t listen/watch/pay attention to that comedian. I don’t buy a Earl Sweatshirt (that’s a rapper I was told about last week, he’s fucking awful) CD and then whine about how offensive he is. I don’t follow people on Twitter and then tweet about how unfunny they are. I just don’t get people who go out of their way to be offended. There’s a billion other options, and a billion other better uses of your time than complaining about one person you don’t like. We’re getting to the point where networks and websites and comedians are so scared to push the envelope that everything is getting so watered down and family-friendly. So stop fucking being offended by everything you pussies.
