How Do Professional Athletes Even Find Sports Fun?
(Note: this is more about basketball players, and maybe golfers, because they're sports you can practice completely alone. Everything is fun with friends, but just shooting or hitting the driving range solo? That's gotta get dull once you've become an expert)
You may have heard, but Steph Curry returned to basketball last night and with him came some warm up videos, as they always do with Steph because even those are fascinating. Well it reminded me of a question I always have when I see professional basketball players shooting in an empty gym: are they even having fun? How could they possibly be? I understand they're honing their skills and they've got millions of reasons to do that, but are they actually enjoying what they're doing? It's so fucking easy for them that I feel like they absolutely must be bored. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that if we had a race where I had to write my name 50 times before Steph Curry made 50 shots I think he would finish before me and I would make more errors than he does. That can't be entertaining for him.
Don't get me wrong, I'd take that skill in a heartbeat, but isn't part of the fun of things being kinda bad? Maybe that's just something I've told myself because I'm bad at most things, but world domination isn't fun, dominating the world is. The journey is the reward and all that. Once you've reached this level of mastery and draining 3's is as easy as inhaling oxygen I feel like I'd just get bored of it without someone trying to stop me.
And yes, I realize in those above videos it's the greatest shooter to ever live, but NBA players are so fucking good. All of them. Here's a shorter video but it's Dwight Howard, noted bad shooter, draining 3s. If you're a professional just playing alone I'm sure they're hitting everything at an absurd percentage and that's just not fun. It's like playing your little brother who doesn't have fully developed motor skills in a video game, beating the snot out of him is funny for a bit but eventually you just want to do something else.
PS - I guess JJ Reddick has addressed this and it's basically exactly how I would think. Once the paychecks stop coming then fuck it.
